On the heels of discussion in our community recently about the validity of the practice of conversion therapy, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Oxford County wishes to confirm its stance that conversion therapy has no therapeutic merit and only perpetuates oppression and discrimination toward those who are part of our 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Research has shown that conversion therapies are highly unethical, not supported by any reliable evidence and have very negative effects on human beings. As a leader and champion for mental health in our region, CMHA Oxford County recognizes that homosexuality is definitively in no way a mental illness, and sees no basis for any therapy that aims to convert a person’s sexual orientation.
As an organization that works directly with 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, we have seen the mental anguish they experience as they continue to strive for acceptance in our society. We want these individuals to know CMHA Oxford is here to help. If you’re in need of mental health and addictions supports, contact us in Woodstock at 519-539-8055, Tillsonburg at 519-842-8869 or Ingersoll at 519-539-8055, or complete this referral form and send it to Information&Referral@cmhaoxford.on.ca.
